Dr. Mukul M. Sangma – Harbinger of a Rich Legacy
One of the country’s most dynamic and multifaceted politicians, Dr. Mukul Sangma remains an enigma unto himself. The Chief Minister of Meghalaya was born in the year 1965 on the 20th of April to Binoy Bhushan M Marak and Roshana Begum. He was born in the Ampati village located in the present South West Garo Hills district. Dr. Sangma studied at the Government High School in Ampati, clearing his school examinations in the year 1982 and later enrolled at the St. Anthony’s College in Shillong where he cleared his pre-university examination in Science in 1984.
A Doctor & Student Leader
Dr. Sangma studied medicine at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal and graduated with flying colors in 1989. The seeds of public leadership were sown from the very beginning as Dr. Sangma held several governing body positions in the RIMS Students Council. It was in 1991, when he joined as a health and medical officer at Zikzak Public Health Centre, that he encountered people from diverse walks of life and this stirred in him a burning desire to serve them to the best of his ability. His medical career brought him closer to the masses and their problems, to which he ardently sought solutions.
A Chequered Political Career
In 1993, Dr. Sangma was elected from the Ampatigiri constituency to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. He sucessfully won his first election as an independent candidate and was also appointed the Chairman of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation. He was re-elected to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from the same constituency in 1998, 2003 and 2008 as a candidate from the Indian National Congress. He also became the Home & Education Minister in the Meghalaya Government in 2003 spearheaded by Chief Minister D.D. Lapang. He also became the deputy chief minister of Meghalaya in the year 2005. Dr. Sangma has also been the Parlimentary Secretary of the Government of Meghalaya between 1996 and 1998. As a Cabinet Minister, he has handled diverse portfolios including Taxation and Fisheries apart from Home & Education.
He was re-elected as the deputy chief minister of the Congress led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government led again by Chief Minister D.D. Lapang in 2009. After D.D. Lapang resigned on the 19th of April, 2010, Dr. Sangma became the Chief Minister of Meghalaya on the 20th of April, 2010, his birthday. Dr. Sangma has been an active student leader and a practising physician. He was re-elected as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya on the 5th of March, 2013.
Inclusive & Development Oriented Governance as the Primary Goal
Not many people are aware that Dr. Sangma is a talented singer and has also sung for a Christmas album in the days when he was the Deputy Chief Minister. He is fluent in 6 languages including Garo which is his mother tongue and Meitei. Dr. Sangma is driven by his personal motto to serve wholeheartedly and sow the seeds for all-round development of Meghalaya and its people. He follows a liberal, inclusive and rational brand of governance where development is automatically at the forefont of all administrative progress.
