The Department of Agriculture, Government of Meghalaya, organized a Focus Group Workshop for one day, pertaining to 1917-iTEAMS or Integrated Technology Enabled Agri-Management System. The workshop was organized at the IATC (Integrated Agriculture Training Centre) in Upper Shillong. Dr. Mukul Sangma, the Chief Minister, Meghalaya, attended the workshop as the Chief Guest while other attendees included P Sampath Kumar, Commissioner & Secretary, Agriculture Department, B Mawlong, Joint Secretary, Agriculture Department, officials from several other departments, entrepreneurs and farmers.
Dr. Sangma addressed the gathering at the workshop, stating how it was the perfect platform for idea exchange amongst all stakeholders in the sector. He added that technology should be tapped in this era for ensuring better access to crucial information for farmers. This will certainly go a long way towards making farming more profitable according to him. He added that farmers have to be skilled and empowered with the creation of an extensive support framework as well. He stated that farming should attract youngsters and highlighted the Government’s emphasis on boosting this sector in the state.
iTEAMS is a Government initiative that offers access to sustainable and profitable markets for farmers via a comprehensive network of extension facilitation services and logistics. In his address, Dr. Sangma also emphasized upon how farming and farmers were the backbones for nutrition and food security and the growing need for a more extensive support system for them.
