Chief Minister, Meghalaya, Dr. Mukul Sangma, laid the foundation for a dedicated Science and Commerce College at Mahendraganj on the 27th of November, 2017. He also laid the base for a new Maternity and Child Health Hospital here. The event was attended by Zenith Sangma, the Sports & Youth Affairs Minister and Winnerson D Sangma, the Government Chief Whip. Boston Marak, GHADC CEM and Dikkanchi D Shira, Mahendraganj MLA, also attended the event.
The Maternity & Child Health hospital will be built at Mahendraganj and the college will come upon a plot donated by the Nokma of Baksapara and this is situated only a few kilometers away. Dr. Sangma stated that the highest number of government employees are working in the Education department and this has led to greater emphasis on this sector. Health and education are the cornerstones of all development and the Meghalaya Government has been striving to bring improvements in both sectors according to him.
Dr. Sangma also stated that the decision of the Government to set up an educational institution at Baksapara was aimed at arresting the migration of Meghalaya’s youth towards urban centers search of educational opportunities. Educational institutions need not always be located in the state capital or urban settlements according to him and can also be distributed evenly across the districts in order to give more scope to the youth of the state for pursuing higher education.
Dr. Sangma added that the new hospital and college would be major hubs for the entire region. A new town will also be developed once the college is completed and underprivileged mothers will also get justice with the establishment of the new hospital according to Dr. Sangma. Dikkanchi D Shira also stated that the Government has been working proactively to address the concerns of people and their aspirations as well. She added that these institutions would be major legacies dedicated by the Meghalaya Government to its citizens.
