Chief Minister, Meghalaya, Dr. Mukul M Sangma, laid the foundation stone for the establishment of the Nongkhlaw Eco Resort. The foundation stone was laid by the Chief Minister on the 3rd of November, 2017. This event took place as part of the 2017 Krem Tirot Festival and was graced by Shri. Kennedy C Khyriem, the Parliamentary Secretary, Tourism and Shri. Metbah Lyngdoh, the MLA, Mairang Constituency.
The Chief Minister addressed the gathering, stating that Nongkhlaw has immense historical importance and has huge potential for being promoted as an exclusive and innovative destination for cultural tourism. He also stated that tourism should be spurred by all major stakeholders and facilitation has to be the Government’s job.
Mukul Sangma also stated that the Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Centre has already received sanction from the Government for being established at Nongkhlaw and the procedure of allotment of work and tendering will take place soon. He added that the Government agenda is to provide opportunities for everyone via sustainable tourism opportunities. He highlighted the unique traditions and ways of life in Meghalaya and its vibrant cultural scene as major strengths which can add huge value to essential tourism projects.
He also talked of how Nongkhlaw can work as a catalyst when it comes to spurring similar projects in other areas across the state. Meghalaya ultimately has to be positioned as one of the most favourable destinations for tourism according to Dr. Sangma. The event also witnessed the submission of a memorandum to the Chief Minister by Pa’iem Phrestar Manik Syiemlieh, the Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw.
