Dr. Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister, Meghalaya, stated that this party has always supported and encouraged those who wish to become entrepreneurs and do business. However, the party will be strictly avoiding those who view business as a way to fulfil their own vested interests. He stated that there are parties which back businessmen who are self-centred but his party will be promoting entrepreneurship for the growth of the community and this is the biggest agenda at the moment.
This may have been a veiled reference to Sniawbhalang and Ngaitlang, the Dhar brothers who will be joining the National People’s Party after exiting the Congress. Some business leaders who were victorious in the 2013 Assembly polls include prominent construction tycoon Ngaitlang who got elected from Umroi while Sniawbhalang won from Nartiang. The latter was the richest amongst all of the 345 people contesting the Assembly polls of 2013. He is the owner of Dhar Brothers Constructions and is also a leading contractor with multiple road projects in the State under his belt.
Dr. Sangma also stated that candidates may be announced post-Christmas by the Congress in two phases. He talked of the announcement being a surprise although it will be made swiftly once Christmas is over. Dr. Sangma will be contesting for two seats and there will be a total of 59 Congress candidates for the 60 seats on offer.
Dr. Sangma also said that there is huge pressure to come up with candidates in those constituencies which are now represented by rebel MLAs from the Congress. He added that the party has several promising people who wish to come into its fold as candidates and this will set a new benchmark in the future. Dr. J. Ryndong will also be a good prospect for the Congress for the Pynursla ticket according to him.
