Dr. Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister, Meghalaya, started his election campaign from Songsak in Garo Hills, the stronghold of the National People’s Party (NPP). Dr. Sangma is contesting from here and flagged off the Congress campaign with gusto. Dr. Sangma is contesting from Songsak and also from Ampati which is his own stronghold. The National People’s Party’s Nihim D Shira is fighting Dr. Sangma from Songsak who is the representative of the constituency in the Legislative Assembly and is trying to win a third term.
Dr. Sangma started off his election campaign by stating that the foundation laid so far by him in Meghalaya is not enough since there is still a lot more to be done for development in the State. He talked of having made a small beginning towards enabling the acceleration of development and growth in Meghalaya and how there remains a lot to be done in the near future.
Dr. Sangma also alleged that the BJP is funding the NPP for contesting the elections and called the party the Agents of BJP. He talked of how he had already been a legislator for 5 terms and also been the Chief Minister from Meghalaya. The decision to contest the elections from Songsak comes from an ardent desire to bring about development in Meghalaya which is more equitable according to him. The Congress has also revealed its list of 57 candidates who will be contesting the upcoming Assembly elections in Meghalaya.
The votes will take place on the 27th of February, 2018 and there was immense anticipation regarding the release of the list of Congress candidates previously. Dr. Sangma thanked the people in Songsak for their welcome and talked of doing his best as the Chief Minister to serve the people in the area and across the State. He also declared that the people in the State deserve the best and nothing else.
Dr. Sangma has always made his intentions clear with regard to winning Songsak and in the year 2015, while he was campaigning for Dikkanchi D. Shira, Mahendraganj MLA and his wife during the Tura Lok Sabha byelection, he stated that the would ensure the defeat of Nihim D Shira and James. K Sangma, the MLA from Dadenggre in 2018.
